Sexual compulsivity is an
illness, much like depression and alcoholism. In
the most basic terms, a sexual compulsion causes
a person to adopt harmful or self-destructive sexual
habits and relationships. This could mean: multiple
sexual partners without a meaningful relationship;
feeling the need for sexual contact with an inappropriate
partner - such as a child, or a relative; obsessions
with pornography; compulsive masturbation, and other
activities or outlets. Often times, these damaging
habits are coupled with other psychiatric disorders
that may exist such as depression and other anxiety
disorders.
These
destructive social behaviors and choices can be
damaging both to the individual, and to people with
whom the individual comes in contact with. Sexual
compulsivity can be a sign of more serious psychological
issues, all of which can be helped by professional
counseling.
